Alma, or Vj Deliria, when we take a look at your extensive professional career, innovation and avant-garde are two words that immediately come to mind. Audiovisual artist, graduated in Communication Design, graphic designer, VJ (video jockey), radio speaker, marketing director, and a long series of etcetera... You currently have a music project linked to blockchain technology and NFTs, as well as several other art projects. How did this new challenge arise?

I consider Blockchain technology as a new space to explore and it definitely encourages you to try new things. I believe that music has a key role to carry this technology to the mainstream and make it closer to the people. Many years ago I started doing live visual performances for my friends, that's when I started as Vj Deliria. Visuals have to go hand in hand with music, so my world has always revolved around it, but never with a project of my own. Last year I decided to take the plunge and jump into the NFT space, which has allowed me to build a community around my project. When I started discovering this world, I was really struck by the independence and decentralization it offers, as it allows artists to connect to the audience in a more global way. The NFT space has opened doors for me internationally and I have been able to partner with people all over the world and do collaborative projects. Blockchain technology has given us the power to connect and create a community.

When did you first come across this technology?

I started investing in cryptocurrencies in 2018 and at this time, it was just a type of investment. That's how I started keeping up with the news to find out what was happening in this sector. Later on, during the pandemic, I first heard the term crypto art, so I had a click and I thought that's what I had to do. "I don't know what it is or what it means, but I have to explore it," I thought. It seemed like a very organic and very interesting step. Right now it's all in the process of expanding and people need to understand what it's all about in order to approach this decentralized world. For thousands of years, we have lived in a centralized world. Financially, economically, politically, socially... Our systems have always been centralized in different institutions and governments. Thanks to decentralization, these barriers open up and we can communicate between us through the blockchain, where there is no middleman. Another reason why I decided to use this format in my project is that, thanks to the traceability of the NFTs, which are public, even if piracy does not stop, it can be traced more easily and it helps transparency a lot.

So you decided that this should have been the format for your new project… Why?

Exactly. I started to surf the net and deeply inquire about it. Thanks to the Clubhouse platform, I started to learn more about the NFT space and attend open forums for discussion and learning. I was up all day and night. I think that, as all of us were locked down in our homes because of Covid, we needed to find another way g to connect with each other.

It wasn't easy living with the pandemic in New York City ...

No, it wasn’t. I was locked up in my flat for three whole months because there was located the epicenter of the virus. During that time I focused a lot on my studio, on productions, and at the same time, I started listening to Clubhouse about blockchain. They were all in English, so I thought I was lucky to be able to understand them and it got me thinking about the Latino community. "Ok, I know all about it and I'm learning a lot, but it's because I understand the language," I thought. So I decided to give my own lessons about NFTs in Spanish. I titled them “NFTianguis” with the purpose to inform in my native language about this technology. So, I started to create connections in this English-speaking and more international NFT space, and then I created my Latin communities, with all the information in Spanish.

What does Tianguis mean?

It is a Nahuatl word that means market. Everything I do is very connected with pre-Hispanic and indigenous culture, that's why I chose this word in the Aztec Nahuatl language. The concept of the Tianguis is to provide a platform where artists can sell their artworks, talk about them and share information about art. It is also a concept created by a collective of Hispanics for Hispanics; by artists, for artists. A support group to lead people into the Metaverse. We also have a Telegram channel, and Discord server, we do collective drops...

What about the collective drops?

Basically, we invite artists to create an artwork about a common theme and we give them a deadline to get it ready. We turn each piece into NFT and make it up on sale. This allows us to provide these artists with a way to start making their own NFT collections. It’s nice. Once the NFT artworks are sold, the artists decide what percentage of the revenue they want to get and what percentage they want to donate to our project in order to continue helping new artists. It is a private choice. Our advisory is for free, but the artists have the possibility to offer remuneration, whatever they want, for the work we do.

What are the themes of these collective drops?

We are currently on our fourth collection and the fourth collective drop. The first one was called "Chucholucos". This is also a Nahuatl word that means "little things". We are referring to the little things you can buy in the " Tianguis" folkloric stuff from the Mexican and Latin American street markets. That was the theme. The second drop was called "Latino Urbano" and was about the life of Latinos in big cities. The third drop was called "Camino Al Mictlan" and was about the celebration of the Day of the Dead. The fourth drop was about Artificial Intelligence and all the works were created with this technology.

So, you are going from organizing events in the real world to moving them into the Metaverse…

Yes, indeed. Thanks to NFTs now I organize exhibitions in the Metaverse. For the first exhibition, I contacted street artists, and also NFT artists to encourage the creation of digital pieces inspired by urban art. When graffiti art started, the innovation was about bringing art closer to ordinary people. Before its appearance, art belonged to museums, galleries... But graffiti takes art out of those places and puts it on the streets by making it accessible to everyone. That's why I wanted to recover this concept of accessibility in order to convey that the Metaverse should also be accessible and easily reachable for artists, and especially the Latino community [smiles].

Was it hard finding people who were already in the NFT space for your first collective collections?

Yes, it's a very niche space but the forums and discussion pages about blockchain helped me to create a lot of relationships. every Tuesday and Friday I would do Clubhouse sessions with the artists to help them with whatever they need. As of this year, 2022, we migrate to Twitter Spaces on Tuesdays 6pm EST. That's where the collective collections project came from.

What was the reaction to the first virtual exhibition?

It was great. The artists and visitors enter the Metaverse with an avatar and we go through the artworks in the exhibition together with the creators, who give us information about the pieces. It's a virtual tour where we give the artists the space to explain their creations. There we are all applauding with the avatars [she shows a video of one of the virtual exhibitions]. It's a new medium that allows us to show our art within the Metaverse to people from different parts of the world, each avatar is in a different place on the planet! [laughs].

Why did you decide that the second exhibition should have been about Chile?

I made the “Chile Diverso” exhibition because of an invitation from El Ministerio de las Culturas y las Artes del Patrimonio de Chile ( The Ministry of Cultures and the Arts of Chile's Heritage). They invited me to talk about blockchain as a revolution that it’s also related to the creative economy as it allows us, the artists, to monetize art through secondary sales. For the presentation, I wanted to collaborate with Chilean artists who were already creating NFTs.

How did the “Tribu” NFT project come about?

This project is also related to Chile. In order to connect with their community, I started researching artworks about the original peoples of Chile. Then, I searched for information about the Rapanui community, an indigenous community that lives on Easter Island and is claiming independence from the Chilean state. This caught my attention because in Mexico and in many parts of the world these indigenous communities have been dispossessed of their lands during the colonization age. Later, when the countries became independent, these communities were annexed to different states, but there are many of them that keep on fighting for their autonomy because they do not want to be part of established governments. It’s definitely hard to find mentions about them in the news. I was inspired by these communities to create the Tribu NFT project, an exhibition focused more on pre-Columbian art, indigenous peoples, and the culture of native peoples. It's important for me to talk about these themes and make the connection with blockchain technology in order to give these communities the opportunity to live forever in the blockchain through art.

Are there a lot of people in the Latin blockchain community?

Yes, and we are growing more and more. Obviously, the English-speaking communities are currently the most relevant, but the Latino community is waking up. I think that there are many of us and little by little we are going to get the relevance of other communities.

The “Camino al mictlán” exhibition has caught our attention...

It was a very intense collective NFT drop about the Day of the Dead theme. In Aztec philosophy, the “Mictlan” was the path you start when you die. This path is made of nine levels and when you reach the last one you come to Nirvana, not to death. For the development of this drop, we did briefings with anthropologists, archaeologists, poets, and philosophers, a total of nine sessions, precisely. We learned a lot and included more education on topics related to our culture. We collaborated with professionals from the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, poets, philosophers... people who are not in the NFT space and who came virtually to the educational workshops to share their knowledge.

We know that you are also collaborating with several non-profit organizations of social utility... how do you connect this activity with blockchain technology?

Yes, I am currently part of the "Sustainable Plastic Culture" group, which is an official project of the SDSN, Mexico. The SDSN (Sustainable Development Solution Network) is a United Nations initiative that aims to support the 17 global goals that have been agreed upon by international governments. The objective of the SDSN is to form alliances between business, citizens, government, universities and the private sector to promote sustainable development and thus help countries to achieve the 17 global goals by 2030. We are now in "the decade of change". The idea is to bring together or involve the greatest number of people in a population so that the impact is greater and sustainable. This requires a platform that can facilitate mass access, and that is where the blockchain comes in. The project that the Sustainable Plastic Culture group is running is called the Nomadic Plastic Museum. This concept was founded by a Mexico City anthropologist, Edgar Correa, to promote education and culture around plastic. Our goal is to divert plastic from its route to the oceans. When Edgar's initiative was approved and he began to build a professional team, he called me to take charge of the museum's art direction. Currently we have done drops and exhibitions in the metaverse with NFT artists around the theme of plastic consumption, recycling, use and re-use.

At what point the project is?

We are now at a very early stage of production, the physical building still does not exist, but strategy and planning have already been done and officially approved. Our first objective is to raise awareness, educate and inform the population to avoid plastics reaching the sea. Through this project, we aim to bring information to the communities so that they can learn to use plastic responsibly by recycling it and giving it a second use. The message we want to share is that plastic is not bad. Everyone uses to tell that plastic is bad, but plastic revolutionized many industries and gave societies an opportunity for growth. We are now living in the age of plastic, so we cannot demonize the material, but we can educate people to make good use of it.

And how do NFTs fit in it?

My first task in this project was to raise awareness among artists about this topic. We did several sessions with Olivia Henández, an important scientist working on this project who joined our blockchain forum, together with a team of anthropologists, in order to share information about plastics and polymers. The artists had to turn this information into different artworks. What you see below [ she shows a presentation of artist works ] are artworks in NFT format created following the information sessions. ´

The idea is to bring together or involve the greatest number of people in a population so that the impact is greater and sustainable. This requires a platform that can facilitate mass access, and that is where the blockchain comes in.

Crypto-art as a medium of public outcry with a huge reach...

Exactly. I want all my projects about blockchain technology and NFT to be focused on these issues. I believe that technology and all the improvements brought by NFTs have to be at the service of humanity, giving a voice to many social issues. In my opinion, our art needs to focus on these issues, and blockchain technology gives us the opportunity to reach all over the world

Tell us about your experience at the NFT. NYC, the leading annual NFT event in New York City.

It was an amazing experience. I was the first Latina to talk about indigenous communities across the NFT space. My talk was entitled "Latin American NFT Spaces and Artists", in which I told a narrative about my migration to the metaverse and the push for artists to migrate with me through exhibitions, collaborations, workshops, and collective drops. It was like giving a report to the international NFT community of the projects we have created, making use of this blockchain technology in a Latin American context. They put my picture in Times Square during the event. It was something really incredible. This opportunity helped me to access a massive exposure that I’ve never had before. And it's all thanks to the NFTs.

Are you going to be back this year?

Yes! last year I focused more on the community and this year, although I still have a lot of projects related to the community, I want to focus on music and my VJ Deliria project with the song "LOVE", which is the first track I minted from my own Smart Contract. A very big step, as this kind of technology, brings artists a bit closer to decentralization. Creating your own Smart Contract provides more creativity and autonomy. If all of us mint from Opensea's Smart Contract, it's not that decentralized anymore...

LOVE is the first musical project in NFT format by Vj Deliria.

How do you involve the community in your LOVE project?

I invited the community to collaborate with me by remixing my LOVE track using the stems, or original files. Selected remixes will be turned into NFT music.

Have you received many remix proposals for the track?

Yes! it's been amazing to see the way the music producers have integrated their own ideas into my original concept. It's a privilege and an honor. I have made a selection of six remixes that we are going to mint and sell. The profits will be shared 50/50 on the blockchain to encourage musical collaboration.

Have you got a favorite remix?

I'm a big fan of the band Aterciopelados from Colombia, a cult band that I've been following for more than a decade. They play about gender equality, social struggles, water protection... they are real "artivists". Hector Buitrago, co-creator of the band, became interested in the NFT this year and approached my Twitter Spaces that I do every Tuesday. He was one of the ones who sent me the remix. It's a dream I never imagined could happen - it blew my mind! The NFTs help us connect with everyone, no matter where we are or who we are.

Vj Deliria: “La tecnología y los NFT deberían estar al servicio de la Humanidad”

La artista mexicana participará en la NFT. NYC por segundo año consecutivo, donde presentará su primer proyecto musical en formato NFT, 'LOVE'.

Alma, más conocida como Vj Deliria, es una artista multidisciplinar que entró en el mundo de los NFT en 2021. Nacida en México y presente en la escena de arte neoyorquina desde hace años, combina sus proyectos propios como el lanzamiento de su primera canción y vídeo en formato NFT, ‘LOVE’, con la difusión, la educación y la producción de este tipo de arte ligado a la tecnología blockchain.

Alma o VJ Deliria, cuando vemos su extensa trayectoria profesional, innovación y vanguardia son dos palabras que nos vienen de inmediato a la mente. Artista audiovisual, licenciada en Diseño de la Comunicación, diseñadora gráfica, vj (video jockey), locutora de radio, directora de marketing, y un largo etcétera...Actualmente cuenta con un proyecto de música ligado a la tecnología blockchain y a los NFT, así como varios de arte. ¿Cómo surge este nuevo reto?

La tecnología blockchain supone para mí un nuevo mundo de exploración y de experimentación que te anima a probar cosas nuevas. Yo creo que la música es la plataforma para poder expandir esa tecnología al mainstream, acercarla más al público. Hace muchos años que comencé a hacer performance de visuales en vivo para mis amigos, ahí comencé como Vj Deliria. Los visuales tienen que ir a la par con la música, por lo que mi mundo siempre ha girado alrededor de ella, aunque nunca con un proyecto propio. El año pasado decidí lanzarme y me metí de lleno en el mundo NFT, lo que me ha permitido construir una comunidad alrededor de mi proyecto. Cuando empecé a descubrir este mundo me llamó mucho la atención la independencia y la descentralización que ofrece, ya que permite a los artistas conectarse a la audiencia de una forma más global. El mundo de los NFT me ha abierto las puertas a nivel internacional y he podido formar colaboraciones con personas en todas partes del mundo y hacer proyectos colaborativos. La tecnología blockchain nos ha brindado el poder de conectarnos y crear comunidad.

¿Cuándo descrubrió esta tecnología?

Empecé a invertir en criptomonedas en 2018 y bueno, en ese entonces simplemente era un tipo de inversión. Así fue como empecé a estar al tanto de las noticias para enterarme de lo que ocurría en este sector. Más adelante, durante la pandemia, fue cuando escuché por primera vez el término de criptoarte. Mi cabeza hizo ‘click’ y pensé que eso era lo que tenía que hacer. “No sé qué es ni qué significa, pero tengo que explorarlo”, pensé. Me pareció un paso muy orgánico y muy interesante. Ahorita está todo en proceso de expansión y la gente necesita entender de qué se trata para acercarse a este mundo descentralizado. Durante miles de años hemos vivido en un mundo centralizado. Financieramente, económicamente, políticamente, socialmente...Nuestros sistemas han estado centralizados siempre en diferentes instituciones y Gobiernos. Gracias a la descentralización, estas barreras se abren y empieza un sistema de comunicación entre nosotros a través de la blockchain, en el que no existe ningún intermediario. Otra de las razones por las que decidí usar este formato en mi proyecto es porque, gracias a la trazabilidad de los NFT, que es pública, aunque la piratería no se acabe se puede trazar de manera más fácil ayuda mucho a la transparencia.

Así que decidió que este debía ser el formato de su nuevo proyecto... ¿por qué?

Exacto. Empecé a navegar por la red y a informarme bien. Gracias a la plataforma Clubhouse, el mundo NFT empezó a abrirse ante mí y comencé a meterme en foros abiertos de discusión y aprendizaje. Me pasaba toda la noche y todo el día. Creo que del hecho de que todos estuviéramos encerrados en nuestras casas por el covid nos surgió esta necesidad de conectarnos con los demás de otra forma.

No fue fácil vivir la pandemia estando en Nueva York...

No. Estuve en mi departamento encerrada sin salir de mi casa tres meses enteros porque ahí estaba el epicentro del virus. Durante ese tiempo yo me enfoqué mucho en mi estudio, en la producción, y al mismo tiempo empecé a escuchar Clubhouse sobre blockchain. Todos eran en inglés, así que pensé que era una afortunada de poderlo entender y me llevó a pensar en la comunidad latina. “Ok, todo esto yo lo sé y estoy aprendiendo un chorro, pero es porque yo entiendo el idioma”, pensé. Entonces decidí empezar a abrir mis propios Clubhouse en español sobre NFT. Los titulé NFTianguis y el objetivo era informar en mi idioma nativo sobre esta tecnología. Empecé a formar conexiones en este mundo anglo y más internacional de NFT, y luego creé mis comunidades latinas, con toda la información en español.

¿Qué significa Tianguis?

Es una palabra náhuatl que significa mercado. Todo lo que yo hago tiene mucho que ver con la cultura prehispánica e indígena, por eso me identifiqué con está palabra en lenguaje náhuatl azteca. El concepto del Tianguis es proveer una plataforma donde los artistas puedan venir a vender su obra, a hablarnos de ella y a hacer este intercambio de información alrededor del arte. Es también un concepto de colectivo de hispanos para hispanos; de artistas, para artistas. Un grupo de apoyo para guiar a la gente dentro del metaverso. También tenemos Telegram, tenemos Discord, hacemos drops colectivos...

¿Cuál es el concepto de drop colectivo?

Es básicamente cuando invitamos a los artistas a que creen una obra en torno a un mismo tema y les damos una fecha límite para que la tengan preparada. Cada pieza la convertimos en NFT y la ponemos a la venta. Esto nos permite proveer a estos artistas de una ayuda para que empiecen a hacer colecciones de NFT propias. Es bien bonito. Cuando las obras se venden, los artistas deciden el porcentaje que quieren recibir de su obra y el que quieren donar a nuestro proyecto para seguir ayudando a nuevos artistas. Es una elección privada. Nuestro asesoramiento es gratuito, pero los artistas tienen la posibilidad de ofrecer una remuneración, la que ellos quieran, por el trabajo que hacemos.

¿Cuál ha sido la temática de estos drops colectivos?

Ahorita ya vamos por la cuarta colección y el cuarto drop colectivo. El primero se llamó Chucholucos. Es una palabra también náhuatl que significa ‘cosillas’. Las cosillas que se compran en el tianguis. Todo lo que es folclórico de los tianguis mexicanos y de América Latina. Ese era el tema. El segundo drop se llamó “Latino Urbano” y se trató de la vida de los latinos en las grandes ciudades. El tercer drop se llamó “Camino Al Mictlan” y se trato de la celebración del Día de Muertos. El cuarto drop se trató de Inteligencia Artiricial y todas las obras fueron creadas con esta tecnología.

De organizar eventos en el mundo real a celebrarlos en el metaverso...

Sí, ahora con los NFT organizo exhibiciones en el metaverso. En la primera que hice contacté con colectivos de graffiti, muralistas y también con artistas NFT para incentivar la creación de obras digitales inspiradas en este arte urbano. Cuando el graffiti empezó, una de las cosas innovadoras que trajo fue que acercó el arte a la gente normal. Antes de su aparición el arte pertenecía a los museos, a las galerías...Pero el graffiti saca el arte de esos lugares y lo pone en la calle, en las vías públicas, para hacerlo accesible a la gente. Por eso quise rescatar ese concepto de accesibilidad para transmitir que el metaverso también debe ser accesible y debe estar al alcance de los artistas, y especialmente de la comunidad latina [sonríe].

¿Le costó mucho encontrar gente que estuviese ya dentro del mundo NFT para sus primeras colecciones colectivas?

Si, es una burbuja muy pequeña pero los foros y las páginas de debate sobre blockchain me ayudaron a crear muchas relaciones. Cada martes y viernes hacía Clubhouse sesiones con los artistas para ayudarles con lo que necesitasen. Desde este año, 2022, migramos a Twitter Spaces en horario de martes 6pm EST. De ahí fue surgiendo el proyecto de las colecciones colectivas.

El metaverso también debe ser accesible y debe estar al alcance de los artistas

¿Qué tal fue la respuesta de la de la primera exposición virtual?

Estuvo súper bien. Los artistas y los asistentes entran en el metaverso con un avatar y recorremos las obras de la exposición junto a los creadores, que nos van dando información sobre sus obras. Es un recorrido virtual donde les damos a los artistas el espacio para explicar sus creaciones. Ahí estamos todos aplaudiendo con los avatares [muestra un vídeo de una de las exposiciones virtuales]. Es una nueva modalidad que nos permite mostrar nuestro arte dentro del metaverso para que lo vean personas desde diferentes partes del mundo. ¡Cada avatar está en un lugar diferente del planeta! [ríe].

¿Por qué decidió que la segunda muestra fuera sobre Chile?

La exhibición de Chile Diverso la hice para honrar una invitación de El Ministerio de las Culturas y las Artes del Patrimonio de Chile. Ellos me invitaron a hablar sobre blockchain como una revolución que también tiene que ver con la economía creativa porque a los artistas nos permite rentabilizar nuestro arte a través de las ventas secundarias. Para la presentación quise hacer una colaboración con artistas chilenos que ya estaban haciendo NFT.

¿Cómo surge el proyecto NFTribu?

Surge a raíz de Chile, también. Para conectarme con su comunidad empecé a investigar sobre obras de arte y sobre los pueblos originarios de Chile. Entonces fui a dar con información de la comunidad de Rapanui, que es una comunidad indígena que vive en la Isla de Pascua y están buscando ser independientes del estado chileno. Esto me llamó mucho la atención porque en México y en muchas partes del mundo a estas comunidades indígenas se les despojó de sus territorios durante el periodo de las conquistas y de la colonización. Después, cuando los países se independizaron, estas comunidades fueron anexionadas a diferentes estados, pero hay muchas que siguen luchando por su autonomía porque no quieren ser parte de gobiernos establecidos. Son movimientos de los que casi no se habla en las noticias. En ellas me inspiré para crear el proyecto NFTribu, una exhibición enfocada más a estos temas de arte prehispánico, pueblos indígenas y la cultura de pueblos originarios. Es importante para mí traer estos temas a la mesa de la mano de la tecnología blockchain para darles la oportunidad a estas comunidades de que vivan infinitamente en la blockchain a través del arte.

¿Hay mucha gente dentro de esta comunidad de blockchain latina?

Sí, y no paramos de crecer. Obviamente, todo esto se mueve más en las comunidades anglosajonas, pero la comunidad latina está despertando. Yo creo que somos muchos y poco a poco vamos a alcanzar a otras comunidades.

Es importante para mí traer estos temas a la mesa de la mano de la tecnología blockchain para darles la oportunidad a estas comunidades indígena de que vivan infinitamente en la blockchain a través del arte

Nos ha llamado mucho la atención la muestra del Camino al Mictlán...

Sí, fue un drop colectivo muy intenso, el tema es el Día de los Muertos. El Mictlán era, en la filosofía azteca, el camino que empiezas en el momento en que mueres. Está compuesto por nueve niveles. Cuando llegues al último nivel es como llegar al Nirvana, no a la muerte. Para hacer el drop hicimos sesiones informativas con antropólogos, arqueólogos, poetas, filósofos, un total de nueve sesiones, precisamente. Aprendimos mucho e incluimos más educación sobre temas relacionados con nuestra cultura. Colaboramos con profesionales del Museo Nacional de Antropología de la Ciudad de México, poetas, filósofos... gente que no está dentro del mundo NFT y que acudió de forma virtual a los talleres educativos para aportar su conocimiento.

Sabemos que también está involucrada con diferentes organizaciones sociales... ¿Cómo aunar esta rama con la tecnología blockchain?

Sí, actualmente soy parte del grupo 'Cultura Sostenible del Plástico', que es un proyecto oficial de la SDSN, México. La SDSN (Sustainable Development Solution Network) es una iniciativa de las Naciones Unidas que pretende apoyar las 17 metas globales que se han acordado entre los gobiernos internacionales. El objetivo de la SDSN es formar alianzas entre empresas, ciudadanía, Gobierno, universidades y sector privado para favorecer el desarrollo sostenible y así ayudar a los países a alcanzar las 17 metas globales para el 2030. Estamos ahora en “la década del cambio”. La idea es juntar o involucrar al mayor número de gente de una población para que el impacto sea mayor y sostenible. Para ello se necesita de una plataforma que pueda facilitar el acceso multitudinario, y ahí entra la blockchain. El proyecto que el grupo Cultura Sostenible del Plástico está llevando se llama Museo Nómada del Plástico. Este concepto fue fundado por un antropólogo de la Ciudad de México, Edgar Correa, para impulsara educación y cultura alrededor del plástico. Nuestro objetivo es desviar al plástico de su ruta a los océanos. Cuando le aprobaron la iniciativa a Edgar y comenzó a formar un equipo profesional, me llamó para que me encargara de la dirección de arte del museo. Actualmente hemos hecho drops y exhibiciones en el metaverso con artistas NFT alrededor del tema del consumo, reciclaje, uso y re-uso del plástico.

¿En qué etapa se encuentra el proyecto?

Estamos ahorita en una etapa muy temprana de la producción, todavía no existe el edificio físico, pero la teoría y los reportes y todo lo que tenemos que hacer para presentar la idea, ya está hecha y aprobada de manera oficial. Nuestro primer objetivo es concienciar, educar e informar a la población para evitar que los plásticos lleguen al mar. A través de este proyecto pretendemos traer información a las comunidades y programas informativos para que aprendan a hacer un uso del plástico responsable y sepan cómo reciclarlo y cómo darle un segundo uso. El mensaje que queremos lanzar es que el plástico no es malo. Se nos ha tratado de decir que el plástico es algo malo, que está mal, pero en sí el plástico vino a revolucionar las industrias y ha brindado a las sociedades una oportunidad de crecimiento. Actualmente estamos viviendo en la era del plástico, por lo que no podemos demonizar el material, pero sí podemos educar para que la gente haga un buen uso de él.

¿Y dónde encajan aquí los NFT?

Mi primera tarea en este proyecto fue acercar estos temas a los artistas. Hicimos varias sesiones con Olivia Henández, una gran científica que trabaja en este proyecto y que acudió a nuestro foro de blockchain, junto a un equipo de antropólogos, a ofrecer información sobre los plásticos y polímeros. Esta información, los artistas tuvieron que convertirla en diferentes obras de arte. Lo que ves aquí abajo [enseña un documento de las obras de NFT llevadas a cabo por los artistas] son las obras que se produjeron a partir de estas sesiones informativas y que se pasaron a formato NFT.

Criptoarte como plataforma de denuncia social de máximo alcance...

Exacto. La idea es que todo esto que estoy haciendo sobre tecnología blockchain y NFT sea enfocado en estos temas. Creo que la tecnología y todos los avances que estamos viendo gracias a los NFT tiene que emplearse en beneficio de la Humanidad, tratando temas sociales a los que hay que darles voz. En mi opinión, esos temas son los que tenemos que abordar en nuestro arte, y la tecnología blockchain nos da la oportunidad de poder llegar a todas partes del planeta.

Háblenos de su experiencia en la NFT. NYC, la convención de NFT más grande de Nueva York.

Fue estupenda. Fui la primera latina que habló sobre las comunidades indígenas en este tipo de plataformas. Mi platica se tituló “Latin American NFT Spaces and Artists” y en ella conté una narrativa sobre mi migración al metaverso y la impulsión de artistas a migrar conmigo a través de exhibiciones, colaboraciones, talleres y drops colectivos. Fue como dar un informe a la comunidad internacional NFT de los proyectos que hemos creado, haciendo uso de esta tecnología blockchain en un contexto de América Latina. Pusieron mi foto en Times Square durante el evento. Una cosa increíble. Ese es el tipo de oportunidades para acceder a plataformas masivas que no se me habían presentado antes. Y todo ha sido gracias a los NFT.

¿Volverá este año?

Un paso muy grande, ya que cuando los artistas usamos nuestro propio contrato inteligente (Smart Contract) para la creación de NFTs, nos acercamos un poco más a la descentralización.. Crear tu propio contrato inteligente nos proporciona una creatividad y una autonomía agregada. Si todos minteamos bajo el Smart Contract de Opensea, ya no es tan descentralizado....

¿Como involucras a la comunidad en tu proyecto de LOVE?

Invité a la comunidad a colaborar conmigo haciendo un remix de mi tema, LOVE, usando los stems, o archivos originales. Los remixes seleccionados se convertirían en música NFT.

¿Ha recibido muchas colaboraciones?

¡Sí! Ha sido un sentimiento bien bonito ver cómo los productores escucharon mis ideas originales y le agregaron las suyas. Es un privilegio y un honor. He hecho una selección de seis y estos remixes van a ser minteados en NFT y vendidos. Las ganancias serán compartidas al 50% en la blockchain para incentivar la colaboración musical.

¿Se queda con alguno en especial?

Soy muy fan de la banda Aterciopelados de Colombia, es una banda de culto a la que sigo desde hace más de una década. Tocan temas de igualdad de género, luchas sociales, protección de las aguas...son unos verdaderos “artivistas”. Hector Buitrago, co-creador de la banda, se interesó en los NFT este año y se acercó a mi Twitter Spaces que hago cada Martes. Él fue uno de los que me envió el remix. Es un sueño que nunca imaginé que podría pasar. ¡Me voló la cabeza! Los NFT nos ayudan a conectarnos con todo el mundo, no importa dónde estemos ni quién seamos.

"After working for different companies in Barcelona and London, I decided to start my own project, a mobile application. I was researching how to get more out of it when I came across blockchain technology and the so-called ICOs," recalls García [an ICO in the blockchain world refers to raising funding for a project by selling a cryptocurrency. The name comes from Initial Coin Offering or Initial Coin Offering]. "It was a new form of crowdfunding that was very successful at the time," he explains.

Although they never got to finish their ICO project, García, who was 30 years old at the time, dropped everything and began to study the different applications of blockchain technology in companies, focusing on consulting and coaching systems. At the time, he admits that it was not easy for him to find a school in which to learn about blockchain and enrolled in the only one that offered courses in Spanish. "There were eight of us in class," he comments with a laugh as he highlights the boom that this technology has had in the last four years. "Now there are between four and five schools dedicated entirely to blockchain in Spain. Although they are usually the same professors in all of them," he notes.

"If you want to be up to date with how this technology is evolving, you have to dedicate all your time to it, so if you want to dedicate yourself only to consulting or teaching, I'm sorry, but you're not going to be up to date," explains the young man, pointing out the dizzying speed at which this market is evolving. In his case, he devotes 100% of his time to research and once a year he conducts a four-month course at the EAE Business School in Barcelona, where he is the program director, on Fintech, blockchain and decentralized finance to expose to students everything he has learned in a year. "If it wasn't like this, I wouldn't be up to date and would be offering a backlog course to my students," he explains.

When asked why he decided to change his life and focus entirely on this technology, the professor assures that the world of blockchain brings together three of his passions: innovation, technology and finance. "The most interesting aspect of blockchain is that it can change society and that it has the economic incentives needed to bring about that change," he says with conviction. "In other words, you can participate in an NGO, ask for a minimum amount of money to support a cause and people will collaborate out of charity. However, with blockchain we can change the rules and make sure that those who are giving money get something back. That's an incentive," he argues.

During his university years, García recalls the limitation he felt when "studying an infinity of economic theories, more than 200 years old, which are tested over the years and are practically immovable". "Blockchain allows you to do financial social experiments instantly and globally, without the need to pay a group of students for years to try to find something new locally, as we did in class," he adds. In his opinion, "all economics universities should have blockchain classes as a base" since, "thanks to Smart Contracts, new rules of the game can be established that everyone can access due to the transparency of this technology".

However, his fascination with 'blockchain' goes far beyond the financial branch, as the expert comments. "The advantages of blockchain come from the empowerment of users (citizens), of smaller companies with respect to large ones... It is something as intangible as empowerment, democratization," stresses García, who always begins the courses he teaches with a Philosophy class. "If you don't understand that this is a sociological change, we won't really understand the advantages of using this new technology," he assures.

With respect to critics of this new technological current who claim that blockchain technology is not needed to modernize or innovate the current ecosystem, García reaffirms that the importance of the 'blockchain' does not lie in technological innovation, but in the sociological aspect. "We cannot empower people with current technology. With blockchain, we can. That is the goal," he remarks while confessing that, although it is not easy to make people understand the degree of sociological implication of this technology, once the paradigm shift is understood, the financial backing (through cryptocurrencies) works as an engine as it is an economic incentive. "Through the blockchain we empower the actors who are fighting for that sociological change with economic incentives in the form of tokens," he explains.

García gives the use of the watch as an example. "If I tell you it's 3.15 p.m. and you're not sure, you can look at the clock and check that, indeed, it's not. It is 11.30 a.m. Blockchain is exactly this, that I have something and you don't have to trust me to know if I'm telling the truth, but you can verify it. The clock is the decentralized way of knowing that we are all under the same time coordination. Do we need the clock to live? No, but we would not be coordinated when going to work, organizing meetings, eating... Blockchain is the same. If we use it we will be coordinated globally and we will know with certainty that we can trust each other because we can trust this system, this technology," he says.

With respect to the DAO or Decentralized Autonomous Organization, García likens this structure to a globally coordinated cooperative in which the workers who contribute the most value to the organization are financially incentivized through Smart Contracts. The idea that this technology could spell the end of governments and banks as we know them does not seem so far-fetched to him, although he dismisses it completely. "It's true that with blockchain we don't need governments or institutions, just computer code that makes the system work. However, in the 1990s it was also believed that the Internet was going to mean the end of them and, in the end, what really happened is that there are four companies that control it," he argues. That is why he advocates education as a fundamental pillar to introduce blockchain technology in our society. "We have to educate the population so that they see that it is better to use decentralized networks and DAOs instead of turning to governments, banks, etc. And that they don't see blockchain as just another technology," he stresses.

Asked about the hype of NFT collections, which began last year and whose volume of transactions in January 2022 amounts to 12,000 million dollars, the expert explains that it is "one more use of the blockchain", as cryptocurrencies had been until now, and he values very positively the future scope within the art world. "All art is going to be in NFT format," he assures without a hint of doubt. "And not only in art. For example, you have two avocados with two labels that say they are organic. On one you can check it by scanning a QR code that tells you the whole story of the product: where it comes from, type of cultivation, etc. And on the other, it doesn't. Which one is organic? Which one would you buy?" he asks.

Regarding art, "the same thing happens." "In addition to certificates of authorship and authenticity of the works, imagine that Paris Hilton sells a NFT, to give an example, and you buy it. You're not buying an NFT, you're buying Paris Hilton's NFT and already because of that it has another value. If you sell it, the value increases because it belonged to Hilton and previously to Picasso, another example. Thanks to the blockchain, the buyer can verify that, indeed, it belonged to these two personalities, so there is no risk of fraud," he argues.

According to the professor, the pace of implementation of blockchain technology in our society is advancing by leaps and bounds and it is increasingly difficult to speak of a future that is not an immediate present. "Everything is going much faster than we think," he concludes.

García combina su trabajo como investigador en blockchain con sesiones de consultoría para empresas y es profesor en varias escuelas de negocio, entre ellas la EAE Business School de Barcelona y Blockchain School of Management.

La vida de David García, licenciado en Economía, dio un giro de 180º cuando en 2018 escuchó por primera vez hablar sobre tecnología blockchain. Especializado en la rama más financiera, García decidió abandonar la empresa de turismo que había fundado junto a un socio para dedicarse por completo a esta pionera tecnología. “Después de trabajar para diferentes empresas en Barcelona y en Londres decidí empezar mi propio proyecto, una aplicación móvil. Estaba investigando cómo sacarle un mayor provecho cuando me topé con la tecnología blockchain y las llamadas ICO”, recuerda García [una ICO en el mundo blockchain se refiere a la captación de financiación para un proyecto mediante la venta de una criptomoneda. El nombre viene de Initial Coin Offering u Oferta Inicial de Monedas]. “Se trataba de una nueva forma de crowdfunding que tuvo mucho éxito en ese momento”, explica.

A pesar de que nunca llegaron a finalizar su proyecto ICO, García, que por aquel entonces tenía 30 años, dejó todo y se puso a estudiar las diferentes aplicaciones de la tecnología blockchain en empresas, enfocándose en la consultoría y en el sistema de coaching. Por aquel entonces, reconoce que no le fue fácil encontrar una escuela en la que aprender sobre blockchain y se matriculó en la única que ofrecía cursos en castellano. “Éramos ocho personas en clase”, comenta entre risas mientras destaca el boom que ha tenido esta tecnología en los últimos cuatro años. “Ahora ya hay entre cuatro y cinco escuelas dedicadas íntegramente a la blockchain en España. Aunque suelen ser los mismos profesores en todas”, apunta.

“Si quieres estar al día de cómo evoluciona esta tecnología tienes que dedicar todo tu tiempo a ello. Por eso, si quieres dedicarte sólo a la consultoría o a dar clases, lo siento, pero no vas a estar al día”, explica el joven mientras remarca la velocidad vertiginosa a la que evoluciona este mercado. En su caso, dedica el 100% de su tiempo a la investigación y una vez al año lleva a cabo un curso de cuatro meses en la EAE Business School de Barcelona, dónde es el director del programa, sobre Fintech, blockchain y finanzas descentralizadas para exponer ante los estudiantes todo lo aprendido en un año. “Si no fuese así, yo no estaría al día y estaría ofreciendo un curso atrasado a mis alumnos”, explica.

Cuando se le pregunta por el motivo por el que decidió cambiar su vida y centrarse por completo en esta tecnología, el profesor asegura que el mundo de la blockchain aúna tres de sus pasiones: innovación, tecnología y finanzas. “El aspecto más interesante que posee la blockchain es que puede cambiar la sociedad y que dispone de los incentivos económicos que se necesitan para que se dé ese cambio”, comenta convencido. "Es decir, tú puedes participar en una ONG, pedir un mínimo de dinero para apoyar una causa y la gente colaborará por caridad. Sin embargo, con blockchain podemos cambiar las reglas y conseguir que aquel que está aportando dinero reciba algo de vuelta. Eso es un incentivo”, argumenta.

Durante los años de Universidad, García recuerda la limitación que sentía al "estudiar infinidad de teorías económicas, con más de 200 años de antigüedad, que se van probando a lo largo de los años y que son prácticamente inamovibles”. > “Blockchain te permite hacer experimentos sociales financieros de manera instantánea y global, sin necesidad de pagar a un grupo de estudiantes durante años para tratar de encontrar algo nuevo a nivel local, como hacíamos en clase”, añade. En su opinión, “todas las universidades de Economía tendrían que tener como base clases de blockchain” ya que, “gracias a los smartcontract se pueden establecer unas nuevas reglas del juego a las que todo el mundo puede acceder debido a la transparencia de esta tecnología".

Sin embargo, su fascinación por la 'cadena de bloques' va mucho más allá de la rama financiera, como comenta el experto. “Las ventajas de la blockchain vienen del empoderamiento de los usuarios (los ciudadanos), de las empresas más pequeñas respecto a las grandes... Es algo tan intangible como el empoderamiento, la democratización”, destaca García, que empieza siempre los cursos que imparte con una clase de Filosofía. “Si no se entiende que esto es un cambio sociológico, no entenderemos realmente las ventajas de utilizar esta nueva tecnología", asegura.

Con respecto a los críticos de esta nueva corriente tecnológica que afirman que no se precisa de la tecnología blockchain para modernidad o innovar el ecosistema actual, García se reafirma en que la importancia de la ‘cadena de bloques’ no radica en la innovación tecnológica, si no en la vertiente sociológica. “No podemos empoderar a la gente con la tecnología actual. Con la blockchain, sí. Ese es el objetivo”, remarca mientras confiesa que, aunque no es fácil hacer entender a la gente el grado de implicación sociológica de esta tecnología, una vez se entiende el cambio de paradigma, el respaldo financiero (a través de las criptomonedas) funciona como motor al ser un incentivo económico. “A través de la blockchain empoderamos a los actores que están luchando por ese cambio con incentivos económicos en forma de tokens”, explica.

García pone como ejemplo el uso del reloj. “Si yo te digo que son las 15.15 horas y tú no estás segura, puedes mirar en el reloj y comprobar que, efectivamente, no lo son. Son las 11.30 horas. Blockchain es exactamente esto, que yo tenga algo y que tú no tengas que confiar en mí para saber si estoy diciendo la verdad, sino que puedas verificarlo. El reloj es la manera descentralizada de saber que todos estamos bajo una misma coordinación de tiempo. ¿Necesitamos el reloj para vivir? No, pero no estaríamos coordinados a la hora de ir al trabajo, de organizar reuniones, de comer... Blockchain es lo mismo. Si lo utilizamos estaremos coordinados de manera global y sabremos con certeza que podemos confiar en todos nosotros porque podemos confiar en este sistema, en esta tecnología”, relata.

Con respecto a las DAO u Organización Autónoma Descentralizada, García asemeja esta estructura a una cooperativa coordinada a nivel global en la que se incentiva económicamente a los trabajadores que más valor aportan a la organización a través de los smartcontracts. La idea de que esta tecnología podría suponer el fin de los Gobiernos y los bancos, tal y como los conocemos, no le parece tan descabellada, aunque la descarta por completo. “Es verdad que con blockchain no necesitamos gobiernos o instituciones, solamente código informático que haga funcionar el sistema. Sin embargo, en los años 90 también se creía que Internet iba a suponer el fin de estos y, al final, lo que realmente pasó es que existen cuatro empresas que lo controlan”, arguye. Por eso aboga por la educación como pilar fundamental para introducir la tecnología blockchain en nuestra sociedad. “Hay que educar a la población para que comprueben que es mejor utilizar redes descentralizadas y DAOs en lugar de recurrir a los gobiernos, bancos etc. Y que no vean la blockchain como una tecnología más”, destaca.

Preguntado por el hype de las colecciones de NFT, que comenzó el año pasado y cuyo volumen de transacciones en enero de 2022 asciende a 12.000 millones de dólares, el experto explica que se trata "de un uso más de la blockchain", como hasta ahora habían sido las criptomonedas, y valora muy positivamente el alcance a futuro dentro del mundo del arte. “Todo el arte va a ser en formato NFT”, asegura sin ningún asomo de duda. “Y no sólo en el arte. Por ejemplo, tienes dos aguacates con dos etiquetas en las que pone que son ecológicos. En uno lo puedes comprobar escaneando un código QR que te cuenta toda la historia del producto: de dónde viene, tipo de cultivo etc. Y en el otro, no. ¿Cuál te comprarías?”, pregunta.

Con respecto al arte, “lo mismo”. “Además de certificados de autoría y de autenticidad de las obras, imagina que Paris Hilton vende un NFT, por poner un ejemplo, y lo compras. No estás comprando un NFT, estás comprando el NFT de Paris Hilton y ya por eso tiene otro valor. Si lo vendes, el valor aumenta por haber pertenecido a Hilton y previamente a Picasso, otro ejemplo. Gracias a la blockchain el comprador puede verificar que, efectivamente, perteneció a estas dos personalidades, por lo que no hay riesgo de estafa”, argumenta.

Según el profesor, el ritmo de implantación de la tecnología blockchain en nuestra sociedad avanza a pasos agigantados y cada vez es más difícil hablar de un futuro que no sea un presente inmediato. “Va todo mucho más rápido de lo que pensamos”, concluye.

With an English mother and a Spanish father, the Ibizan combines her passion for painting with work as a forest firefighter and art teacher for children. "I think it's an ordeal to make a living on just one thing and I don't want to live on art alone. It's like putting on a label," says Sánchez, who prefers "a flexible life with jobs that begin and end and being able to dedicate great seasons to painting."

"Faroe Island" is the name given to the first NFT collection of this Ibizan artist, which is still in the development period. The works on which the digital assets will be based are inspired by six paintings he painted during his stay on the in the archipelago of the Kingdom of Denmark two years ago. "When Ibiza Token contacted me I already knew about NFTs thanks to my Austrian friends. One of them did very well at the beginning, even the mortgage of his house was paid", recalls Sánchez, who considers "very interesting the legal digitization of a work so that it does not run through the network without supposing any benefit for the author" [with the purchase of an NFT the owner gets a "seal of authenticity" by the creator of the work,  but the authorship does not change and no copyright is transferred. In this way, every time the work is sold, the creator receives a percentage of the sale automatically].

For her NFT collection, she selected the paintings from the Faroe Islands because they have some stories attached to them. The digital asset that was presented in the exhibition 'Beyond the METAverse', carried out by the Consell de Ibiza together with Ibiza Token in Sa Nostra Sala, is related to a story of ecology that the artist wrote after her time in the region.

"It is a wise plant that grows in places where the ecosystem is in danger of extinction. In the bubbles, which are their flowers or fruits, it reveals to humans what they have to do to restore the ecosystem," explains the author of the story, who also finished during the pandemic an interactive book for children with 16 complex labyrinths. "I would love to see this project digitized in NFT format," she confesses.   Romanie Sánchez, during her stay in the Faroe Islands.

However, its relationship with the world of blockchain technology began some years ago, in 2015. "At that time I was spending a lot of time in Austria, in Vienna, and I had several friends who were very involved in the world of digital art," recalls. In fact, one of them "paid the rent of the house in which he lived with what he earned from hanging his art on a blockchain platform."  A couple of years later, and with her friend visiting the island to attend one of his exhibitions at the Diari Club, it was when she made an account on one of these platforms and began to post content.

"I've been uploading artistic content on this platform since 2017 and last year I started with the collection of mamarrachos", explains the painter, a project she started last summer during her work as a forest firefighter in which she gave life to the doodles made by her fellow brigade members. "Little by little the project grew and I have been sent mamarrachos (doodles) to Venezuela, as well as from all over the island," she reports.

This type of platform linked to the blockchain allows artists from all over the world to exhibit their work and receive an economic return in the form of cryptocurrencies thanks to the votes of the public, which they can then convert into Fiat money (euros or dollars). Thus, content creators from disadvantaged places see these projects as a way to get direct income thanks to their art, explains Sánchez.

"It is very interesting because, in addition, some citizens of Ukraine are posting information about what is happening in their country without any censorship by the government or the media. So do some Russians. As they are on the blockchain they cannot be blocked," she explains, even though she does not consider herself a devotee of this technology.

"I also have my doubts. I am concerned about the environment and the large amounts of energy that is used in this type of technology," she adds. However, her partner, who has been collecting information about the famous 'blockchain' for years, assures her that "surplus energy leftover from factories is used to mine, as well as solar places".

To close the interview, the Ibizan painter highlights that, in her opinion, "you have to be open to new concepts and supports" and try to inform yourself "as much as possible" so that these "do not catch you by surprise", since, what she does believe is that "the future of money is in cryptocurrencies".

Accesibilidad, libertad e ingresos en formato NFT

La pintora ibicenca Romanie Sánchez comenzó a subir contenido artístico en plataformas ligadas a la tecnología blockchain en 2017

“Nunca quise ser artista”, confiesa Romanie Sánchez nada más empezar la entrevista. Sin embargo, la elegancia de su pintura onírica, así como una larga lista de exposiciones en diferentes partes del mundo, no dejan lugar a dudas. Autodidacta y en constante evolución, explica que entró en el mundo del arte como una “vía de autoconocimiento”, más que por “estética o belleza”. “Produces un montón de obras, haces exposiciones y da la casualidad de que se van vendiendo piezas. Entonces es cuando empiezan a llamarte artista. Aunque yo no pinto para vender”, asegura entre risas.

De madre inglesa y padre español, la ibicenca combina su pasión por la pintura con el trabajo como bombero forestal y profesora de arte para niños. “Me parece un suplicio ganarme la vida tan sólo con una cosa y no quiero vivir sólo del arte. Es como ponerse una etiqueta”, opina Sánchez, que prefiere “una vida flexible, con trabajos que comienzan y terminan", para poder dedicar largas termporadas a la pintura.

‘Faroe island sequence’ es el nombre que recibe su primera colección de NFT, que se encuentra aún en periodo de desarrollo. Las obras en las que estarán basados los activos digitales están inspiradas en seis cuadros que pintó durante su estancia en el archipiélago del Reino de Dinamarca, hace dos años. “Cuando Ibiza Token se puso en contacto conmigo ya conocía los NFT gracias a mis amigos austriacos. A uno de ellos le fue muy bien al principio, incluso se pagó la hipoteca de su casa”, recuerda Sánchez, que considera “muy interesante la digitalización legal de una obra para que no corra por la red sin suponer ningún beneficio para el autor” [con la compra de un NFT el dueño consigue un 'sello de autenticidad' por parte del creador de la obra, pero la autoría no cambia y no se transfieren derechos de autor. De esta forma, cada vez que la obra se vende el creador recibe un porcentaje de la venta de manera automática].

Contadora de historias, comenzó su andadura por el universo NFT con estas obras debido a los cuentos ligados a ellas. El activo digital que se presentó en la exposición ‘Beyond the METAverse’, llevada a cabo por el Consell de Ibiza junto a Ibiza Token en Sa Nostra Sala, está relacionado con un relato de ecología que la artista escribió tras su paso por la región.

“Se trata de una planta sabia que crece en lugares en los que el ecosistema está en peligro de extinción. En las burbujas, que son sus flores o frutos, revela a los humanos lo que tienen que hacer para restaurar el ecosistema”, explica la autora del cuento, quién también finalizó durante la pandemia un libro interactivo para niños con 16 complejos laberintos. “Me encantaría ver digitalizado este proyecto en formato NFT”, confiesa.

Sin embargo, su relación con el mundo de la tecnología blockchain empezó hace ya algunos años, en 2015. “Por esa época yo pasaba mucho tiempo en Austria, en Viena, y tenía varios amigos que estaban muy metidos en el mundo del arte digital”, recuerda. De hecho, uno de ellos pagaba el alquiler de su casa con lo que ganaba por colgar su arte en una plataforma de la blockchain”. Un par de años más tarde, y con su amigo de visita en la isla para acudir a una de sus exposiciones en el Club Diari, Sánchez decidió que era hora de abrirse una cuenta en una de estas plataformas y empezó a colgar contenido.

“Llevo desde 2017 subiendo contenido artístico en esta plataforma y el año pasado empecé con la colección de mamarrachos”, explica la pintora, un proyecto que inició el verano pasado durante su trabajo como bombero forestal en el que dio vida a los garabatos que le hacían sus compañeros de brigada. “Poco a poco fue creciendo el proyecto y me han llegado a enviar mamarrachos (garabatos) hasta de Venezuela, además de desde todas partes de la isla”, informa.

Este tipo de plataformas ligadas a la blockchain permite a artistas de todas partes del mundo exponer su obra y recibir un retorno económico en forma de criptomonedas gracias a los votos del público, que después pueden convertir en dinero Fiat (euros o dólares). Así, creadores de contenido de lugares desfavorecidos ven en estos proyectos una forma de conseguir ingresos directos gracias a su arte, explica Sánchez.

“Es muy interesante porque, además, algunos ciudadanos de Ucrania están posteando información de lo que está sucediendo en su país sin ninguna censura por parte del Gobierno ni de los medios de comunicación. También lo hacen algunos rusos. Como están en la blockchain, no les pueden bloquear”, explica cómplice, a pesar de que no se considera una devota de esta tecnología.

“También tengo mis dudas. Me preocupa el Medio Ambiente y las grandes cantidades de energía que se emplea en este tipo de tecnología”, añade. Sin embargo, su pareja, que lleva años recopilando información sobre la famosa ‘cadena de bloques’, le asegura que se utiliza “los excedentes de energía sobrante de las fábricas para minar, así como places solares”.

Para cerrar la entrevista, la pintora ibicenca destaca que, en su opinión, “hay que estar abierto a los nuevos conceptos y soportes y tratar de informarse todo lo posible para que estos no te pillen por sorpresa”, ya que, de lo que sí cree estar segura es de que “el futuro del dinero está en las criptomonedas”.

Since he arrived in Ibiza and found work as a photographer for the magazine Pacha his career has not stopped growing and there are few people who have not come across some of his photographs in different hotels on the island, billboards or even on labels of select bottles of wine. Who is behind those images?

I consider myself a storyteller, a photographer who has been in the world of photography for more than 20 years and loves his work.

What attracted you to photography?

I was born in Barcelona and from a very young age, I wanted to know the world and travel. At the age of 20, I went to London and after a year and a half of studying English, I decided to take a seven-month trip from London to Los Angeles through India, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Australia... In the end, I stayed two years, it was wonderful. That's how my romance with photography began and the possibilities it offers you to observe and capture the beauty of the contrasts of the planet. I traveled alone and took refuge in my camera as a mode of expression.

What brought you to the island of Ibiza?

After this trip, I returned to Barcelona and began to train in art schools. I started that journey without knowing how to use a camera and I returned with a portfolio full of images from almost five continents and with very powerful material, so many doors were opened to me. I started working in audiovisual montages in clubs and parties and as a photographer at night clubs and I thought that, at that time, Ibiza would be a perfect place to look for life. I arrived on the island in 2000 and started knocking on all the doors to offer my services, one of them Pachá, who were looking for photographers for the first issue of their magazine. I had to pass three interviews to work with them. I started as the third and fourth photographer on the team and a year later I was appointed head of photography at the magazine.

A project that changed your life...

 Yes, as the project grew I grew with him and for ten years the magazine Pachá became the Bible of lifestyle in Ibiza: lifestyle, fashion, art, celebrities, nature, hippie world ... He helped me forge a name for myself on the island, train me and show the world what I was capable of. Through this project, I was able to immerse myself in the professional world of photography and create a very powerful network of contacts. It was my cover letter and I am very proud to have been part of that project.

Why did you stop working at the magazine?

 It was in 2011. Until then he worked exclusively for the group because he was the photographer of the brand. I decided to set up an audiovisual production company to work with different clients and start diversifying. Make advertising campaigns, fashion... I also started working with different galleries to make exhibitions of my photographs and with art dealers in Holland and Germany. I exhibited in Paris and in different parts of the world... The production company served as a platform for me to work with a team and continue creating my world. At present, we continue with many products at a commercial level. There is a very powerful human team behind it.

Tell us about your latest projects.

I currently have a wine business. Six years ago I created the concept of 'Art meets Wine' because I thought the bottle of wine would be the perfect vehicle for my photographs. I buy the wine in Rioja and I do the packaging, I have seven qualities of wine and we change the labels every two or three years. It's called Sexycologic.

Where can we find Sexycologic?

It was the wine of the Pacha group for the first 4 years, it was the wine of the house of Lío, Pacha, Destino... Then we also sold it in Cala Bassa, Sa Punta, STK... These two years have been more complicated because the whole issue of covid has slowed down the issue of sales, although we had a contract to move them in Germany and South Korea that has slowed down. Now I am also developing a canned wine with my images and decoration projects in new spaces. My work has many tentacles: photography applied to advertising, decoration, wine bottles, tables, t-shirts... And I've been in the NFT world for a while now.

How did your first NFT (Non Fungible Token) project come about?

I am a restless person who is always attentive to how the market is evolving. I've been in the world of cryptocurrency for a long time and as a visual artist, you are seeing the trend a bit.

What caught your attention about this digital art?

What caught my attention the most is that I consider it a bridge between physical and digital art. Today we live more than ever in a world that is taking more and more steps towards the Metaverse so I think it is necessary to be there, to have a presence in that Universe. Even if you also continue to work in the physical world.

What are the advantages of NFTs?

The NFT offers the possibility of having your images, your art, in another dimension, in other portals where collectors are also there. It is an evolution of art. During the pandemic, I was studying all these platforms and portals a little bit and trying to understand the concept a little bit... It's a very interesting world because it allows you to show your work to the world in a different way.

Before Ibiza Token contacted you, you already had a collection of NFT...

Yes, I had already created some. I had the foundation, but talking to the team behind this project is helping me to understand many more aspects.  I thought it was very accurate what one of the experts who attended the blockchain conference in Atzaró (Ibiza NXT) commented, who said that in this world there is nothing written. "Everything evolved so fast that what today is a hit tomorrow ceases to be so because there is something else." We can see an example of this in the NFT of punkys and gorillas, which are images from another time that have hit the market in a brutal way. That's why you have to be there, in the market.

What do you think of these new art collectors?

In these times great fortunes are being amassed with cryptocurrency. Today many people and many collectors have this virtual money and when they see something that interests them they buy it and revalue the work. You have to be very informed and aware of how the market evolves because otherwise, we would be missing a fantastic opportunity to reach another world and other collectors.

There are people who do not consider digital works of art...

We live in a world so virtual that, sometimes, you don't quite understand it... I see NFTs as a bridge between the physical and the digital. I loved, for example, the presentation of my work in Atzaró. Seeing my geisha on a screen and with movement... I feel like we're changing the rules of the game. You no longer print on methacrylate or aluminum, for example, now the format is different, television screens. I see it as a natural evolution. The truth is that I liked it a lot.

Do you see yourself working more and more on this support?

Yes. Maybe in the future, instead of spending the money on hundreds of prints, I could make an investment in support, 10 or 15 screens, and exhibit my art in this format.  It is still a physical format, although it is digital. When you do an expo there are significant expenses in terms of prints, materials, etc. Why not use this new digital support on a screen? It allows you to change the work also whenever you want.

Do you think it benefits artists?

I think it is a very interesting world that gives an escape route to artists to get out of the circuit of galleries and art dealers. In this way, you are your own art dealer and you are able to reach many more places through these digital platforms where you expose your NFT.

I see NFTs as a bridge between the physical and the digital

Did you have any difficulty developing your NFTs?

I was chatting with the creative team of Ibiza Token about what image we could use and the geisha theme seemed very global, sensitive, and fresh. We thought it could reach many people, so we decided to make it the first. It is true that I am now seeing more possibilities for creation. I'm giving a twist to my work to do animation. That geisha had no animation, it was a static image and we are thinking about the possibilities that exist for him to put a smile or wink. That kind of concept you can not carry out in a print, but in digital format, you can play with all those details and give it another spin. What I like about NFTs is that there are no limitations. Ibiza Token is a platform that combines art and local commerce, do you think that the businesses of the island are prepared to also make the leap to the digital platform?

I think it's going to take time for some. Even I, who am always looking at new trends, had a hard time understanding them. People who are not very up-to-date on new technologies are going to cost a lot more. Sometimes I miss so much knowledge about the virtual world. Imagine someone from another generation, who has not lived it so closely. I think it may take time, I think people are interested, but they are suspicious because they don't quite understand it. But I think it is the future and we have to take positions. The one who first comes to understand it will be able to share it and take advantage of it. Everything evolves in this digital world so it is important to understand and understand it to get the most project for your business or your art. 

Jordi Gómez: “Lo que me gusta de los NFT es que es un soporte en el que no hay límites”

El fotógrafo afincado en Ibiza considera que los Non Fungible Token son el futuro y un puente entre el arte físico y el digital

Jordi Gómez se describe como un contador de historias que lleva más de 20 años en el sector de la fotografía. Nacido en Caldes de Montbui (Barcelona), en 1978, a los 22 años decidió cambiar su residencia y mudarse a Ibiza, donde al cabo de un año ya estaba trabajando de jefe de fotografía en la revista de Pachá. Innovador, vanguardista y amante del mundo audiovisual hace tiempo que comenzó a explorar el mundo de los NFT, que califica como un “puente entre el arte físico y el digital”. “Creo que los NFT son el futuro y hay que ir cogiendo posiciones”, destaca.

Desde que llegó a Ibiza y encontró trabajo como fotógrafo de la revista Pachá su carrera no ha dejado de crecer y son pocas las personas que no se han topado con alguna de sus fotografías en diferentes hoteles de la isla, vallas publicitarias o incluso en etiquetas de selectas botellas de vino. ¿Quién hay detrás de esas imágenes?

Me considero un contador de historias, un fotógrafo que lleva más de 20 años en el mundo de la fotografía al que le encanta su trabajo.

¿Qué le atrajo de la fotografía?

Nací en Barcelona y desde muy joven quise conocer mundo y viajar. A los 20 años me fui a Londres y después de un año y medio estudiando inglés decidí hacerme un viaje de siete meses de Londres a Los Ángeles pasando por India, Tailandia, Laos, Vietnam, Australia... Al final estuve dos años, fue una maravilla. Así fue como empezó mi romance con la fotografía y de las posibilidades que te ofrece para observar y captar la belleza de los contrastes del planeta. Viajé solo y me refugié en mi cámara como un modo de expresión.

¿Cómo llegó a Ibiza?

Después de este viaje volví a Barcelona y me empecé a formar en escuelas de arte. Comencé aquel viaje sin saber usar una cámara y volví con un portfolio repleto de imágenes de casi cinco continentes y con un material muy potente, por lo que se me abrieron muchas puertas. Empecé a trabajar en montajes audiovisuales en clubs y fiestas y como fotógrafo en night clubs y pensé que, en ese momento, Ibiza sería un lugar perfecto para buscarme la vida. Llegué a la isla en 2000 y empecé a llamar a todos las puertas para ofrecer mis servicios, una de ellas Pachá, que estaban buscando fotógrafos para el primer número de su revista. Tuve que pasar tres entrevistas para trabajar con ellos. Empecé como tercero y cuarto fotógrafo del equipo y un año después me nombraron jefe de fotografía de la revista.

Un proyecto que cambió su vida...

Sí, a medida que crecía el proyecto yo crecía con él y durante diez años la revista Pachá se convirtió en la Biblia del lifestyle en Ibiza: estilo de vida, moda, arte, celebrities, naturaleza, mundo hippie... Me ayudó a forjarme un nombre en la isla, a formarme y a mostrar al mundo de la que era capaz. A través de este proyecto pude meterme de lleno en el mundo profesional de la fotografía y crear una red de contactos muy potente. Fue mi carta de presentación y estoy muy orgulloso de haber formado parte de ese proyecto.

¿Por qué dejó de trabajar en la revista?

Fue en 2011. Hasta entonces trabajaba en exclusiva para el grupo porque era el fotógrafo de la marca. Decidí montar una productora de audiovisual para trabajar con diferentes clientes y empezar a diversificar. Hacer campañas de publicidad, moda... También comencé a trabajar con diferentes galerías para hacer exposiciones de mis fotografías y con marchantes de arte en Holanda y Alemania. Expuse en París y en diferentes lugares del mundo... La productora me sirvió de plataforma para trabajar con un equipo y poder seguir creando mi mundo. En la actualidad seguimos con muchos productos a nivel comercial. Hay un equipo humano muy potente detrás.

Háblenos de sus últimos proyectos.

Actualmente tengo un negocio de vinos. Hace seis años cree el concepto de ‘Art meets Wine’ porque pensé que la botella de vino sería el perfecto vehículo para mis fotografías. Compro el vino en Rioja y hago el packaging, tengo siete calidades de vino y vamos cambiando las etiquetas cada dos o tres años. Se llama Sexycologic.

La resvista Pachá me ayudó a forjarme un nombre en la isla, a formarme y a mostrar al mundo de la que era capaz.

¿Dónde podemos encontrar Sexycologic?

Fue el vino del grupo Pacha durante los primeros 4 años, era el vino de la casa de Lío, Pacha, Destino... Luego lo vendimos también en Cala Bassa, Sa Punta, STK... Estos dos años han sido más complicados porque todo el tema del covid ha ralentizado el tema de ventas, aunque teníamos un contrato para moverlos en Alemania y Corea del Sur que se ha frenado. Ahora estoy desarrollando también un vino en lata con mis imágenes y proyectos de decoración en nuevos espacios. Mi trabajo tiene muchos tentáculos: fotografía aplicada a publicidad, decoración, botellas de vino, mesas, camisetas... Y hace un tiempo que estoy en el mundo de los NFT.

¿Cómo surge su primer proyecto de NFT (Non Fungible Token)? Soy una persona inquieta que siempre está atenta a cómo va evolucionando el mercado. Hace tiempo que estoy en el mundo de la criptomoneda y como artista visual vas viendo un poco la tendencia.

¿Qué le llamó la atención de este arte digital? Lo que más captó mi atención es que lo considero un puente entre el arte físico y el digital. Hoy en día vivimos más que nunca en un mundo que cada vez da más pasos hacia el Metaverso por lo que creo que es necesario estar ahí, tener presencia en ese Universo. Aunque continúes también trabajando en el mundo físico, claro.

¿Cuáles diría que son sus ventajas?

El NFT ofrece la posibilidad de tener tus imágenes, tu arte, en otra dimensión, en otros portales donde los coleccionistas también están. Es una evolución del arte. Durante la pandemia estuve estudiando un poco todas estas plataformas y portales y tratando de entender un poco el concepto... Es un mundo muy interesante porque te permite mostrar tu trabajo al mundo de una manera diferente.

Antes de que Ibiza Token se pusiera en contacto con usted ya tenía una colección de NFT...

Sí, ya había creado algunos. Tenía la base, pero hablar con el equipo que hay detrás de este proyecto me está sirviendo para entender muchos más aspectos. Me pareció muy acertado lo que comentó uno de los expertos que acudieron a la conferencia de blockchain de Atzaró (Ibiza NXT), que dijo que en este mundo no hay nada escrito. “Todo evoluciono tan rápido que lo que hoy es un hit mañana deja de serlo porque hay otra cosa”. Podemos ver un ejemplo de esto en los NFT de los punkys y los gorilas, que son imágenes como de otro tiempo que han golpeado el mercado de una manera brutal. Por eso hay que estar ahí, en el mercado.

¿Qué opina de estos nuevos coleccionistas de arte? En estos tiempos se están amasando grandes fortunas con la criptomoneda. Hoy mucha gente y muchos coleccionistas que tienen este dinero virtual y cuando ven algo que les interesa lo compran y revalorizan la obra. Hay que estar muy informado y pendiente de cómo evoluciona el mercado porque si no estaríamos perdiendo una oportunidad fantástica de llegar a otro mundo y a otros coleccionistas.

Hay gente que no considera arte a las obras digitales... Vivimos en un mundo tan virtual que, a veces, no lo acabas de entender...Yo veo los NFT como un puente entre lo físico y lo digital. Me encantó, por ejemplo, la presentación de mi obra en Atzaró. Ver mi geisha en una pantalla y con movimiento... Siento que estamos cambiando las reglas del juego. Ya no imprimes en metacrilato o en aluminio, por ejemplo, ahora el formato es diferente, pantallas de televisión. Lo veo una evolución natural. La verdad es que me gustó mucho.

¿Se ve trabajando cada vez más en este soporte? Sí. A lo mejor en un futuro, en vez de gastarme el dinero en cientos de impresiones, podría hacer una inversión en soporte, 10 o 15 pantallas, y exponer mi arte en este formato. Sigue siendo un formato físico, aunque es digital. Cuando haces una expo hay unos gastos importantes en cuanto a impresiones, materiales, etc. ¿Por qué no utilizar este nuevo soporte digital en una pantalla? Te permite cambiar la obra también siempre que quieras.

¿Cree que beneficia a los artistas? Me parece un mundo muy interesante que le da una vía de escape a artistas para salir un poco del circuito de las galerías y los marchantes de arte. De esta forma tú eres tu propio marchante de arte y eres capaz de llegar a muchos más sitios a través de estas plataformas digitales donde expones tus NFT.

Yo veo los NFT como un puente entre lo físico y lo digital

¿Tuvo alguna dificultad a la hora de desarrollar sus NFT? Estuve charlando con el equipo creativo de Ibiza Token sobre qué imagen podíamos utilizar y el tema de la geisha nos pareció muy global, sensible y fresco y pensamos que podía llegar a mucha gente, por eso decidimos que fuera el primero. Es verdad que ahora estoy viendo más posibilidades de creación. Estoy dándole una vuelta de tuerca a mi trabajo para hacer animación. Esa geisha no tenía animación, era una imagen estática y estamos pensando las posibilidades que existen para que ponga una sonrisa o guiñe un ojo. Ese tipo de concepto no lo puedes llevar a cabo en una impresión, pero en formato digital puedes jugar con todos esos detalles y darle otra vuelta más. Lo que me gusta de los NFT es que no hay limitaciones.

¿Cree que los negocios de la isla están preparados para dar también el salto al mundo blockchain?

Creo que va a llevar su tiempo para algunos. Incluso a mí, que siempre estoy mirando las nuevas tendencias, me costó entenderlo. A la gente que no está muy actualizada en nuevas tecnologías le va a costar mucho más. A veces se me escapa tanto mundo virtual. Imagínate a alguien de otra generación, que no lo ha vivido tan de cerca. Yo creo que puede tardar, creo que a la gente le interesa, pero es recelosa porque no lo acaba de entender. Pero creo que es el futuro y hay que ir cogiendo posiciones. El que primero llegue a entenderlo será capaza de compartirlo y sacar partido de ello. Todo evoluciona hacia este mundo digital así que es importante entender y comprenderlo para sacarle el mayor proyecto a tu negocio o a tu arte.
